Some civil society organisations have urged the public to avoid misinformation capable of undermining ongoing judicial processes with regard to murder in the Ajiran community in Lagos State.

The Centre for Human and Socio-Economic Rights and other civil society groups made the appeal at a news conference in Lagos on Wednesday.

The groups’ spokesperson, Femi Lawnson, also the Coordinator of the Centre for Advocacy for Credible Leadership, said that conflicting narratives on the case had negatively affected public understanding of the criminal proceedings.

Mr Lawnson said that public discussions, especially on social media, should be guided by facts and respect for the rule of law.

Two princes, Sharif Salami and Demola Akinloye, were murdered in Ajiran in 2023 and 2024.

Police authorities apprehended Ahmed Akanbi as a prime suspect. He is currently facing trial at the Agege Magistrates’ Court.

Mr Lawnson said that concerns over the pace of the investigation into the murder led to a petition submitted in January to the inspector-general of police (IG).

He said that the IG subsequently directed a review of the matter, which was done by the the former Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh.

“We have observed with concern the use of public platforms to circulate narratives capable of distorting public understanding of the case and undermining confidence in the judicial process.

“We are here to set the record straight, restore integrity to public discourse and advocate strict compliance with the rule of law,” Mr Lawnson added.

He said the arrest and prosecution of suspects in the case followed established legal procedures, including court processes and cooperation with international law enforcement agencies.

Mr Lawnson described as unsubstantiated and misleading the allegations of corruption, bias and abuse of office against Mr Jimoh.

“After reviewing publicly available records and proceedings, we consider such claims unsubstantiated and misleading,” he said.

He, however, urged the IG to investigate reports of alleged unprofessional conduct by some police officers connected with some aspects of the investigation.

Mr Lawnson said any officer found culpable should face disciplinary measures in line with established procedures.

He also urged police authorities to ensure that officers involved in the matter would remain neutral and professional throughout the judicial process.

He called for clarity on the custodial status of defendants and urged the Nigerian Correctional Service to comply strictly with court orders.

Mr Lawnson stressed the need to protect ongoing investigations and prosecutions against undue influence or interference.

He urged the media, civil society organisations and members of the public to exercise restraint when commenting on matters pending before courts.

He also called for greater transparency and  improved communication from relevant authorities on the progress of  investigation and prosecution in the case.
