Hon. Akin Alabi, whom I fondly call my Honorable, is one politician I love and respect. I got to know Akin Alabi personally through my friends, Adekojo Idris Ayobami and Akin Akinwale. My first encounter with Akin Alabi revealed everything I needed to know about him. He is a very humane, standout, empathetic, and honest politician who loves, cares for, and respects the people he represents.

The night I paid Akin Alabi a courtesy visit at his country home, he mentioned something that resonated with me: his constant touch with his constituents. That night, I made a promise to myself that when I eventually become a representative of my people in the Olamaboro/Ankpa/Omala federal constituency, I will emulate his practice of visiting his constituents almost every weekend and staying in constant touch with the people. From our conversation, it was clear that Akin loves his people and does not hesitate to come through for them when called upon. He is loved by both the young and the old.

Akin Alabi stands as a beacon of representative democracy, embodying the principles of accountability, service, and innovation. As the elected representative for the Egbeda/Ona-Ara federal constituency of Oyo State, he has demonstrated a profound commitment to the welfare of his constituents and the nation at large. His tenure is marked by landmark projects, impactful legislation, and a deep-rooted dedication to uplifting the lives of those he represents.

Akin Alabi’s commitment to public service is evident through the numerous projects he has initiated. Among these is the strategic construction of the road from Accorn Junction to Hope Junction, which, despite its short length, serves as a vital artery linking Old and New Ife Roads. This project is just one example of how Akin prioritises infrastructure development to enhance connectivity and promote socio-economic growth.

Perhaps the most significant achievement as the people’s representative for me as a person is the establishment of the Youth Development and Resource Center. This centre, which he built single-handedly, aims to empower the youth of Egbeda/Ona-Ara by providing training in various tech skills, including web development, content creation, graphic design, and cryptocurrency. By equipping young people with these skills, Akin is raising a generation of innovators and entrepreneurs ready to tackle the challenges of the modern economy.

Furthermore, Akin has addressed pressing infrastructural needs, such as the long-collapsed Paara/Ita Merin bridge, which had severely hampered local economic activities. His efforts to flag off and complete its reconstruction signify his commitment to restoring vital links for communities in the area.

In addition to these projects, Akin has invested in some important services for his constituents. He has procured numerous transformers to enhance electricity supply and constructed streetlights to illuminate the streets of Egbeda/Ona-Ara, ensuring safety and security for residents. His commitment to education is also commendable, as demonstrated by the rehabilitation of classrooms at Urban Day Grammar School, Old Ife Road, Ibadan.

Akin has written two best-selling and impactful books: Small Business, Big Money and How to Sell to Nigeria. These books have shaped and continue to reshape the business climate in Nigeria, as they are the go-to resources for many startups and entrepreneurs starting out in Nigeria.

Hon. Akin Alabi’s impact extends beyond physical infrastructure to legislative contributions. He has sponsored a variety of bills aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians. Among these is the Constitution Amendment to Eliminate Discrimination Against Women in Nationality Law, which seeks to empower women by allowing them to pass their nationality to foreign husbands, thus promoting gender equality.

Another critical bill is the Federal Medical Centre Ona-Ara (Establishment) Bill, which aims to enhance healthcare access for residents of Ona-Ara and surrounding areas. This bill is a step towards ensuring that quality medical services are available to all citizens, particularly in underserved regions.

His legislative agenda also includes the Establishment of the Federal College of Health Technology, Egbeda, which aims to train health professionals and fill the skills gap in the healthcare sector. Additionally, Akin has proposed amendments to the Criminal Code, ensuring that mental health issues, such as suicide attempts, are treated with the sensitivity they deserve.

Other important bills include the National Gaming Bill, which aims to regulate gaming operations and enhance revenue generation for the government, and the Amendment of the Electoral Act, designed to streamline political transitions and ensure continued representation.

Before his political career, Akin Alabi made a name for himself in business, particularly through his pioneering efforts in digital sports betting with Nairabets. As one of the first to introduce this concept in Nigeria, he played an important role in shaping the industry. His graceful exit from the company, without any controversy, speaks volumes about his integrity and commitment to his political aspirations.

Through the Akin Alabi Foundation, he has made contributions to the welfare of countless people in Oyo State and beyond. His philanthropic efforts reflect a profound desire to uplift those in need, regardless of their background or political affiliation. Akin has become a mentor to many, including young people from opposition parties, illustrating his belief in uplifting so many young and vibrant people in politics and business.

As Akin Alabi celebrates his 48th birthday today, it is important to acknowledge his commitment to his ideals and principles.
