Alexandra Eala becomes first Filipino to win WTA singles title in DC Open

Alexandra Eala defeated Jessica Pegula to secure her first WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) singles title, becoming the first Filipino to earn the title at 21.
The match was initially scheduled for Sunday but was suspended due to bad weather conditions, making the rest of the game to hold on Monday.
Pegula won the first set 6-4 before play was suspended with Eala leading 2-1 in the second set.
Eala came back, beating Pegula on a 6-4, 6-0 score to secure her first WTA singles title at the finals of the DC Open.
The rising star made history as the first Filipino to clinch the title moving her from No. 28 to No. 20 on the world rankings with 2,106 points.
The 21-year-old also defeated Elina Svitolina twice, Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina to complete her winning streak. She described the feat as a huge milestone in her career at her first opportunity to clinch the title.
“My first chance at a title knowing it won’t be the last and already having, achieved this milestone for my career,” Eala said.
The result denied Pegula a chance at securing her third trophy of the season and her 12th career title.
In the men’s final, 28-year-old Taylor Fritz edged Spain’s Rafael Jodor 7-6 (2), 6-4 to secure his 11th ATP title.
