Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State has decentralised its monthly environmental sanitation exercise across the seven wards to ensure wider coverage and deepen community participation.

The council chairman, Johnson Akinpelu, disclosed this on Saturday during the state’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise in the local government.

Mr Akinpelu said the council had adopted a ward-based approach, with legislators, supervisors and other relevant officers coordinating the exercise in their respective wards.

“Unlike the usual tradition where management staff and other stakeholders move together to cover different parts of the local government, we are now introducing a ward-based approach.

“Under the new arrangement, legislators, supervisors and other relevant officers in each ward are responsible for coordinating the exercise and mobilising residents within their respective areas.

“This approach is designed to ensure wider coverage, stronger community participation and more effective results,” he said.

The chairman said the council decided to decentralise the exercise after realising that its two compactors were insufficient to cover the entire local government simultaneously.

“We, therefore, concluded that it was necessary to decentralise the exercise and rent compactors for the other five wards to enable us to carry out the exercise simultaneously.

“With this, the progress we recorded today was encouraging across the whole of Alimosho Local Government at once.

“We have resolved as an administration to take environmental issues very seriously,” he said.

Mr Akinpelu said the decentralised approach would also give residents a greater opportunity to take ownership of the sanitation exercise.

He said stakeholders at the ward level would engage directly with residents and communities to improve participation and compliance.

He said the active involvement of legislators, supervisors, officers and residents would extend the reach of the exercise beyond what could be achieved through a centralised operation.

He reiterated that maintaining a clean environment required collective responsibility and sustained action.

Mr Akinpelu urged residents, traders, community leaders and other stakeholders to continue supporting the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

He said the collective effort would help keep the environment clean, promote proper waste disposal and ensure compliance with relevant environmental regulations.

The chairman added that the council would continue to intensify efforts towards achieving a cleaner, healthier and safer community.
