The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court on Tuesday convicted and sentenced two co-defendants of disgraced police officer Abba Kyari to two years in prison for drug trafficking.

Justice Emeka Nwite, in a judgment, said having admitted committing the offence preferred against them in counts five, six and seven by the NDLEA, Chibunna Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne “are hereby convicted accordingly.”

The judge said the terms, which would run concurrently, would commence from the day the NDLEA arrested the defendants.

Messrs Umeibe and Ezenwanne, sixth and seventh defendants, respectively, are the two alleged drug traffickers arrested at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu by the police and handed over to the NDLEA.

They had pleaded guilty to five, six and seven counts preferred against them by the anti-narcotic agency.

At the resumed hearing, NDLEA’s counsel Sunday Joseph told the judge that two motions seeking a plea bargain in respect of Messrs Umeibe and Ezenwanne had been filed.

Mr Joseph said the motions, dated June 13, were filed on June 14.

The lawyer of the two defendants, E. U. Okenyi, agreed with Mr Joseph’s submission.

Also, counsel of other defendants, including Mr Kyari, did not oppose the motions.
