Amnesty International has condemned the killing of at least 17 people by gunmen in the Dangulbi community, Tureta Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The organisation, in a Facebook post on Tuesday, said the incident occurred on June 1, 2026, while the victims were celebrating Eid-el-Kabir with their families.

It also called for justice and protection for affected communities.

The group said, “The Nigerian authorities must urgently investigate this attack, ensure that those responsible are identified and brought to justice in fair proceedings, and take immediate steps to protect communities that remain at risk.

“The authorities must also provide effective support and assistance to survivors, displaced persons and families affected by the attack.

“The killing of 17 people and the looting of homes and businesses in Dangulbi underscore the continuing failure of the authorities to protect communities from relentless attacks by gunmen.”

The group noted that communities in the area continued to live under the constant threat of violence, with devastating consequences for lives, livelihoods and access to essential services.

It added that the fact that many of the victims had travelled to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir with their families made the attack particularly heartbreaking.

“Communities should be able to gather, worship and celebrate in safety, without fear that gunmen will descend on their villages and unleash violence with utter impunity,” the group said.

Amnesty International further noted that the latest attack was part of a broader pattern of insecurity that had devastated communities across the eastern part of Sokoto State and neighbouring states.

According to the organisation, repeated attacks, killings, abductions and displacement have created a climate of fear and uncertainty, while undermining farming activities and threatening the livelihoods of thousands of people.

The group lamented that both the federal and Sokoto State governments had once again failed the people who constantly lived in fear of the next attack.
