The Anambra government has announced the commencement of the enforcement of the state environmental law.

Law Mefor, the Anambra Commissioner for Information, said this in a statement in Awka on Thursday.

He said that individual offenders would pay between N20,000 and N1 million, while corporate organisations that violated the law would pay between N100,000 and N5 million.

Mr Mefor said that under the law, all public and private buildings without functional catchment pits, drainage systems, or any approved means of stormwater control would be penalised.

He said indiscriminate disposal of sachet water nylons, PET bottles, plastics, or any other waste materials at locations other than designated litter points was prohibited.

“The Anambra government wishes to notify the general public that full enforcement of all environmental laws has commenced in the state.

“Anyone caught dropping refuse indiscriminately on roads, expressways, or into drainage will be arrested, prosecuted, and fined,” he said.
