Anambra lawmakers set to review state law for enhanced development

Anambra lawmakers have constituted an eight-man ad hoc committee to review the State Law 2025 for enhanced development.
The committee is headed by Ifeoma Azikiwe (APGA), representing the Onitsha North constituency, with Anthonia Obi as secretary.
On Tuesday in Awka, the state capital, the lawmakers resolved to review the state’s law to bring it in line with current circumstances. It is also to enable people of the state to have prompt knowledge of the law.
Ikenna Offordeme (APGA), the majority leader representing the Ekwusigo constituency, moved the motion for the Law Revision Bill 2025 under Standing Order 74(1).
Jude Umennajiego (APGA), representing Onitsha South 2, supported the motion and urged other lawmakers to do so.
He said that most state laws are obsolete and need to be replaced with current laws that would bring sanity to the legal system.
Obi Nweke, representing Anambra East, said that the review of the law was apt, noting that the state law was last reviewed in 1990.
Noble Igwe, representing Ogbaru, said Anambra people needed to know which laws were to be updated so they could comply.
He said the law was revised between August 1990 and May 1999, indicating that the state is backward in legal matters.
Mr Igwe said that any law deemed unnecessary, including edits by the military government in 1991 to ensure the dispensation of right justice and quality legal knowledge, needed to be reviewed.
Ifeoma Azikiwe, representing Onitsha North 1, said a state cannot function without effective laws that would initiate ways to address important issues.
John Chimezie, representing the Ihiala constituency, said the state law revision bill was apt because it gives room for good laws that would enable research and reference.
He advised the committee members to take the modification, adoption, expectation, and all necessary adaptation into consideration.
Somtochukwu Udeze, the speaker, referred the revised law bill to the ad hoc committee to do a detailed job after the bill passed first and second readings.
Mr Udeze said the law for revision 2025 comprises about 221 bills and urged the committee to conduct a thorough review and report within four weeks.
Responding, Ms Azikiwe, the committee chairman, assured of her team’s commitment to the assignment.
The lawmakers commended Governor Charles Soludo for the massive security control during the festive periods.
