A former Rwandan army sergeant major Robert Kabera, who became an outspoken critic of President Paul Kagame, has been found beheaded in neighbouring Uganda.

Mr Kabera, 50, fled Rwanda after being accused of sexual assault, which he denied.

The ex-sergeant sought asylum in neighbouring Uganda, citing political persecution.

Ugandan police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke on Monday said that Mr Kabera’s head had still not been recovered.

He noted that his body was discovered by residents on the outskirts of Kampala over the weekend.

The Rwandan government has not publicly commented on the killing.

Meanwhile, the opposition party Rwandan National Congress condemned Mr Kabera’s death and demanded a transparent investigation into the incident.

“Now Sergeant Major Robert Kabera is dead, brutally killed at the very place where he was building that future. His warnings must be examined. His killing must be thoroughly investigated. Those who carried it out—and anyone who ordered it—must face justice,” the RNC stated on Monday.

Mr Kabera was a musician and YouTuber with considerable followership on his channel. Many of his videos criticised Mr Kagame and his administration.

The latest incident highlights growing concerns about the safety of Rwandans in exile. In the past, Rwandans such as Patrick Karegeya died under mysterious circumstances.

Mr Kagame, who has been in power since 2000, has faced widespread criticism from human rights groups, foreign governments, and political opponents for suppressing dissent and democratic backsliding, among others.
