The Lagos State chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has called on the government to take immediate, coordinated actions to strengthen road safety and emergency response mechanisms across the country.

The NYCN chairman in Lagos, Adigun Ibrahim, made the call in a statement on Tuesday.

Mr Ibrahim stressed the urgent need for the government to ensure fully equipped, well-coordinated ambulance and trauma response units along major highways and accident-prone routes.

He noted that lives were often lost not only at the point of impact but also due to delayed or inadequate emergency response.

Mr Ibrahim, who also doubles as the chairman of the Forum of NYCN State Chairmen, recommended speed monitoring devices, traffic cameras, and intelligent transport systems to be fully implemented and actively utilised, not just installed.

According to him, these systems are essential for enforcing compliance with speed regulations, providing accurate data for investigations, and enabling the government to make evidence-based safety decisions.

“Nigeria cannot continue to lose its youth to avoidable road tragedies. The future of this country should not die on our highways as a result of weak systems, poor enforcement, or institutional negligence.

“This unfortunate incident must not be reduced to another headline that fades with time. It should mark a decisive turning point in how we approach road safety, emergency response, and the value we place on human life.

“As youth leaders and representatives, we demand urgent action, accountability, and measurable reforms. Let the lives lost serve as a catalyst for change so that no more families are forced to endure such preventable pain,” Mr Ibrahim said.

He extended NYCN’s heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of the two young people—Ayodele Kelvin Olu, a 36-year-old Nigerian-British citizen, and Ghami Sina, a 36-year-old British citizen—who lost their lives in the road accident involving world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, who is currently receiving medical care.

He prayed that the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace and that their memories inspire the reforms Nigeria desperately needed.
