The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) says no responsible government can look away while illegal structures endanger lives, obstruct development, and compromise public safety.

The APC spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, said this in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos, noting that enforcing urban regulations remains vital to ensuring a safe and orderly society.

He explained that the ongoing demolition of illegal structures across the state followed a transparent process anchored on law, due diligence, and several warnings to defaulters before enforcement began.

According to him, the exercise is not an act of cruelty but a necessary measure to prevent avoidable disasters and restore sanity to areas affected by unplanned developments.

Mr Oladejo said that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration had shown restraint and compassion by engaging affected stakeholders and granting multiple compliance extensions before taking any decisive action.

He emphasised that Lagos has a responsibility to safeguard lives and property, uphold planning laws, and ensure that development aligns with the state’s long-term vision for sustainable growth.

“Lagos, under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has demonstrated patience and fairness in implementing these regulations. Every action taken is guided by due process and the public interest,” he said.

The spokesperson stressed that no serious government would permit illegal construction to thrive, particularly when such activities threaten public infrastructure, waterways, and the environment.

He described the enforcement drive as part of Lagos’ broader commitment to urban renewal, environmental sustainability, and the creation of safer, well-planned communities.

Mr Oladejo cautioned against misrepresenting the exercise as politically motivated, saying that the state’s priority remains maintaining order and protecting residents from the consequences of lawlessness.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Lagos will not be lectured on governance by those who fail to understand that development requires discipline, consistency, and adherence to the rule of law,” he said.

He reaffirmed that the Lagos State government would continue to pursue infrastructural renewal and strict urban planning enforcement as part of its vision for a liveable and resilient megacity.

“Lagos remains a model of lawful governance, strategic urban renewal, and genuine compassion. The state will keep faith with the ideals of order, safety, and progress,” Mr Oladejo stated.

He added that the ongoing operations were not aimed at punishing anyone but at ensuring that the city grows in harmony with approved layouts and environmental standards.

“Lagos will continue to enforce its laws without fear or favour while prioritising the safety, dignity, and prosperity of all residents,” Mr Oladejo said.
