The All Progressives Congress’ screening committee has disqualified Uju Ken-Ohanenye, the only female presidential aspirant on the party’s platform.

Ms Ken-Ohanenye failed to make the list of recommended aspirants submitted by the John Odigie-Oyegun-led panel on Friday. She had sought the top office saying Nigeria’s needed “a woman’s touch.”

The panel also disqualified Tunde Bakare, the fiery Lagos Pentecostal preacher. It was not immediately clear why both aspirants were disqualified.

The party, however, recommended Bola Tinubu, Ahmad Lawan, Yemi Osinbajo and 10 others as suitable to contest its primaries scheduled to hold on June 6-8 in Abuja, according to a list of cleared aspirants seen by The Gazette after circulating on social media Saturday afternoon.

Those cleared are Badaru Abubakar, Jigawa governor; Godswill Akpabio, former Akwa Ibom governor; Rotimi Amaechi, former Rivers governor; Ibikunle Amosun, Ogun senator; Yahaya Bello, Kogi governor; Kayode Fayemi, Ekiti governor; and Tein Jack-Rich, businessman.

The rest are Ahmad Lawan, Senate President; Emeka Nwajiuba, former junior minister; Ogbonnaya Onu, former science and technology minister, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Bola Tinubu and Ebonyi Governor David Umahi.

Those not recommended to take part in the primary include Tunde Bakare, Rochas Okorocha, Ben Ayade and Sani Yerima.

The rest include Ken Nnamani, Ikeobasi Mokelu, Demeji Bankole, Felix Nicholas, Uju Ken-Ohanenye and Ajayi Borroffice.

The panel recommended a consensus arrangement in picking a candidate but said elective primary should be allowed to proceed where consensus can’t be achieved.

Fears had gripped Mr Tinubu’s camp during the week when Mr Oyegun emerged as the panel’s chairman, with the former Lagos governor’s supporters saying the former party chairman may not clear their principal.

Mr Oyegun had clashed publicly with Mr Tinubu in 2018, and both accused one another of destructive attacks.
