The All Progressive Congress (APC) has pledged to come out with a more inclusive constitution that reflects the nation’s diversity.

Victor Giadom, the national vice chairman of the South-South zone, stated this at a public hearing on the party’s constitution amendment in Calabar on Tuesday.

Mr Giadom said the essence of the public hearing was to generate ideas towards birthing a constitution that would serve the party’s present and future interests.

The APC official said the ongoing amendment process was to strengthen the values of justice, peace, unity, and progress in the party’s constitution.

“The constitution provides the fundamental principles that define our collective agreement and rules for the day-to-day life of our great party.

“It outlines our powers and limitations as party members; it is therefore the cornerstone of our internal democracy, and it is a living testament to our commitment to justice and equity,” he said.

Alphonsus Eba, a member of the constitution review committee, said the exercise became expedient following the changing political experiences in the nation.

Mr Eba, also the chairman of APC in Cross River, said the party had become bigger than what it was in 2014, adding, “To allow room for effective participation, we must look critically at our constitution.”

On his part, the Cross River governor, Bassey Otu, described the ongoing review process as a welcome development.

Represented by Elvert Ayambem, the speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mr Otu urged party stakeholders in the state to make meaningful inputs to the process.

“I urge party stakeholders to freely make their inputs in order to make the constitution a document that will guide the party’s activities at all times,” he said.
