Argentina declares July 15 national holiday after 2026 World Cup semi-final victory over England

The Argentina Football Association (AFA) has announced July 15 as the country’s ‘National Football Teams Day’ following Argentina’s 2-1 semi-final victory against England in the 2026 World Cup.
The AFA said in an official statement on Wednesday that the date was designated to celebrate the nation’s historic victory against the Three Lions.
The association also stated that the holiday was a tribute to recognise all of the country’s national teams.
The association read, “The date was chosen in tribute to the great and historic victory of the Albiceleste against England in the Semifinal of the 2026 World Cup.
“The team led by Lionel Scaloni fell to the English team by the minimum but, with the goals of Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez, he managed to turn the result around and make an entire country vibrate that flooded the streets with pure celebration.
“But the tribute is not only for that milestone of the Senior Team. The recognition, of course, is also for each and every one of the national teams.”
The Three Lions led the game with a goal from Anthony Gordon in the 55th minute off an effort from Morgan Rogers.
Lionel Scaloni’s men levelled after a brilliant delivery from Lionel Messi, allowing Enzo Fernandez to find the back of the net.
In stoppage time, Argentina came back with another assist from Messi, finding Lautaro Martinez, who came off the bench to seal their second consecutive World Cup final.
