The Nigerian Army on Thursday issued a cheque of N500,000 to the winner of the Chief of Army Staff Special Scholarship award to Bukar Nana-Fatima in Maiduguri, Borno State, for the first academic session.
Ms Nana-Fatima, 18, an Islamic law student from the University of Maiduguri, secured the award after being screened among other applicants by the Nigerian Army.
The cheque was presented to the recipient by the Theatre Commander, Joint Task Force North East, Operation Hadin Kai in Maiduguri, Maj.-Gen. Waidi Shuaibu
According to Mr Shuaibu, the recipient will receive N500,000 each academic session for a period of five years, adding that the money is expected to help her to run a smooth academic life without financial stress.
He said, “This event serves as a reflection of the Nigerian Army’s dedication to promoting education and providing opportunities for young people, especially those who are faced with significant challenges in the wake of insurgency.’’
The commander said that the scholarship was initiated by the COAS to serve as a foundation for establishing peace and development with the aim of empowering deserving students who demonstrated academic promise and commitment.
Mr Shuaibu thanked the COAS for the innovative idea that promotes the academic development of humanity.
Responding, Ms Nana-Fatima thanked the Nigerian Army for the gesture and promised to reciprocate through excellent performance in her studies.
