ASUP tackles Mubi poly management over unremitted pension deductions
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Federal Polytechnic Mubi chapter, has urged the federal government and relevant stakeholders to intervene over alleged non-remittance of pension contributions by the institution’s management.
Chairman of the ASUP chapter, Kadala Bandi, made the call at a press conference in the Mubi Local Government Area of Adamawa State on Thursday.
Mr Bandi alleged that the management failed to remit pension contributions deducted from staff salaries to the pension commission (PenCom) for periods ranging from 18 months to two years and three months.
He said the deductions were made in accordance with the Pension Reform Act, 2014, as amended.
He said the union embarked on strike to demand the remittance of outstanding pension deductions covering November and December 2024, January to July 2025, August to December 2025 and July 2026.
According to him, the press conference was a follow-up to the industrial action and a call for urgent intervention by the federal government through the Federal Ministry of Education (FME) and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
“We have exhausted all internal procedures of seeking redress on this matter without any tangible result.
“Therefore, we are appealing to the Federal Government, critical stakeholders in the sector, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the press to come to our aid,” he said.
Mr Bandi called for an audit and forensic probe into unremitted third-party deductions from 2020 to date, with a timeline for full remittance.
He also urged the FME and NBTE to set up a visitation panel to investigate the matter.
When contacted, the rector of the institution, Abdulrahman Ishiaka, dismissed the allegations as baseless, saying no funds were missing.
Mr Ishiaka said the union failed to suspend the strike as agreed in the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on July 24, 2026.
He appealed to the union to allow peace to reign in the institution so that academic activities could continue.
