At least 46 killed as plane crashes into residential area
No fewer than 46 people were killed after a military aircraft crashed in a residential area of Sudan’s capital city of Khartoum on Wednesday, in one of the deadliest plane crashes in the country’s history.
The Sudanese military said in a statement the plane, which is an Antonov cargo aircraft, was taking off from Wadi Seidna air base just outside Khartoum when it crashed. However, the military didn’t remain muted about the cause of the crash.
According to the New York Times, the state government in Khartoum said that the dozens of people who were killed in the crash included passengers on the plane and residents on the ground.
More than ten people in one city block in Al-Thawra, a residential neighbourhood not far from the air base, were also injured, the state government said.
The air base has been a key part of the Sudanese military’s campaign to retake Khartoum in the ongoing civil war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which has left tens of thousands dead.
The military said the plane was carrying civilians and military personnel.
