AU Commission appoints Obasanjo its High Rep for Horn of Africa
The African Union Commission on Thursday appointed former Nigeria president Olusegun Obasanjo as the High Representative for the Horn of Africa.
Chairman of the commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, in a statement distributed to the media, said the decision was taken to promote peace, security, stability, and political dialogue all over the horn of the African region.
Peoples Gazette learnt Mr Obasanjo’s role is to engage with all relevant political actors and stakeholders in ensuring lasting peace in the African region.
The Gazette learnt Mr Obasanjo has however accepted the appointment, with the Union chairman expressing gratitude to the former Nigeria president.
An excerpt of the statement reads, “Chairman of the commission is most grateful to H.E President Olusegun Obasanjo for accepting this strategic political assignment in the collective union interest of the Union.
“The former Nigeria leader brings with him very rich political experience and impeccable credentials of keen commitment to the lofty ideals of pan-Africanism and regional integration cooperation, as well as a deep knowledge of the current situation in the horn of Africa.”
Mr Mahamat asked stakeholders and the international community to support Mr Obasanjo, who is expected at the commission’s office in the coming weeks.
