Australia extends Commonwealth Games lead as Nigeria stays Africa’s best performer

The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland entered its ninth day on Friday with Australia maintaining a commanding lead atop the medal table after amassing 55 gold, 28 silver and 42 bronze medals for a total of 125.
Australia added five gold medals to its tally on Friday, winning in the men’s elimination race (track cycling) men’s 10,000m race walk and men’s 4,000m Individual pursuit (track cycling).
The country also claimed gold in the women’s 10km scratch race and the men’s C1–C3 1,000m time trial in track cycling. Canada, meanwhile, remained well behind, securing its gold medals in the men’s -66kg and women’s -52kg judo events.
At the same time, Nigeria remains the highest-ranked African nation on the medal table, having won eight gold, five silver and three bronze medals for a total of 16, placing fifth overall so far.
