Australian police said they have opened an investigation after Queensland Member of Parliament (MP) Brittany Lauga reported that she was drugged and sexually assaulted during a night out late last month.

She posted on social media, “This could have happened to anyone, and tragically, it does happen to many of us.”

According to the BBC, Ms Lauga, also the assistant Australia minister for health, was on a night out in her constituency of Yeppoon when the incident happened and reported the case to the police afterwards.

On April 28, Ms Lauga went to the hospital for testing, where results showed there was the presence of drugs in her body, which the 37-year-old said she did not take.

“Tests at the hospital confirmed the presence of drugs in my body which I did not take,” she said, adding the substance “significantly” impacted her.

Subsequently, Queensland Police said their officers have launched an investigation into the incident in Yeppoon. Ms Lauga said other women reached out to her about similar experiences in the same area.

However, the police said no additional complaints have been filed regarding such incidents in the same area, but the department is urging people with similar experiences to come forward.

“The QPS takes all reports of drink spiking seriously and investigates reports of drink spiking on a case-by-case basis, and often in conjunction with other offences such as sexual assault,” the police said.
