Austria coach to resign after failing to reach World Cup

Austria coach Franco Foda has said he would resign from the national team, days after the 2022 FIFA World Cup playoff semi-final loss to Wales.
At a press conference on Monday, Foda, 55, said that he was taking full responsibility for the failure.
“I have had a lot of thoughts in the last days. I have finally decided last night.
“It was still possible that I would eventually have had the opportunity for a contract extension. But that played no role for me because I have taken the responsibility,” Foda said.
He added that Tuesday’s home friendly against Scotland would be his 48th and last with the team.
Foda took over the team in autumn 2017 and led Austria to Euro 2020 last year, including a first-ever win at the continental event.
But elimination in Cardiff at the playoff stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers means Austria’s wait to reach the finals for the first time since 1998 will continue.
