Governor Usman Ododo has raised fresh concerns about security threats in Kogi State, revealing that intelligence reports have confirmed the movement of top bandit leaders into the state over the last three days.

Mr Ododo disclosed this on Thursday in Lokoja, the state capital, after an emergency stakeholders’ meeting with security agencies and traditional rulers.

According to him, security operatives have tracked major bandit commanders to specific locations within the state, prompting an immediate review of the state’s security strategy.

“The major commanders of the bandits have relocated to Kogi State for the past three days. We will not wait for them to fight us. We will take the fight to them,” Mr Ododo said.

Mr Ododo, while assuring residents of their safety, said his administration would not negotiate with criminals or pay ransom under any circumstances.

“We are not going to bow to criminals. We will not negotiate with them or pay ransom. Instead, we will sensitise our people to be security conscious,” he said.

He noted that the state was going through a challenging period and emphasised the need for proactive measures to keep residents safe.

The governor also announced that the State Security Council has resolved to restrict daily activities to 4:00 p.m. until further notice.

He, however, directed churches, mosques, event centres, and other public establishments to streamline their programmes in line with the new security directive.

“We have to put our heads together to save our people. This is a critical time, and leadership demands that we find sustainable solutions to the emerging threats,” Mr Ododo added.

His remarks come amid rumours that bandits have invaded parts of Lokoja, including Zango, Crusher, and Felele.

The Kogi State Police Command, however, dismissed the reports as “fake news” intended to incite fear among residents.

In a statement on Thursday, the police spokesperson, William Aya, warned that spreading false alarms would attract arrest and prosecution.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, warns those peddling rumours of bandit invasion to desist. Anyone found guilty of spreading false alarms will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly,” the statement read.
