On Monday, the police in Zamfara said bandits killed the son of Mamman Tsafe, the commissioner for security and home affairs, and two others in Tsafe town.

A statement issued by the state police spokesperson, Muhammad Shehu, said three others sustained gunshot wounds during the attack on Sunday night.

“Unfortunately, three persons, including the son of the commissioner for security and home affairs, were shot dead by the bandits while scampering for their lives, and three others sustained gunshot wounds,” he said.

Mr Shehu said the incident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. while Muslims observed Isha’i prayers.

He said the armed bandits came from the eastern outskirts of Tsafe town, shooting sporadically.

The spokesperson said the police and other security operatives had mobilised to the scene and engaged the bandits in a gun battle, forcing them to retreat to the bush.

“The attack came hours after a police tactical team repelled another attack by bandits at western outskirts of Tsafe town and returned to normalcy.

“A policeman who had injury during the encounter was visited by the Commissioner of Police at Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital, Gusau, where he was receiving treatment,” he added.

He noted that the state commissioner of police, Ayuba Elkanah, had visited the area to condole with families of victims.
