Bangkok opens 300 cooling centres as temperatures soar

Authorities in Bangkok have opened more than 300 free cooling centres across the city as extreme heat continues to grip large parts of Thailand.
The move comes after three consecutive weeks of sweltering conditions, with heat index levels, a measure combining temperature and humidity, reaching over 50 degrees Celsius in some areas.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration said that since April 1, the heat index has remained in the critical range of 42 to nearly 52 degrees.
Although April is traditionally the hottest month in Thailand, officials note that temperatures have risen significantly in recent years, heightening concerns about public health.
Authorities have warned that prolonged exposure to such extreme heat poses serious risks, urging residents to avoid direct sunlight and to monitor for symptoms such as dizziness, exhaustion, and heat cramps, especially during the peak afternoon hours.
The network of cooling centres includes air-conditioned public facilities such as libraries, health centres, schools and government buildings, as well as shaded outdoor spaces designed to offer temporary relief.
According to local reports, including the Bangkok Post, tens of thousands of people have already used the centres in recent weeks.
Many residents are using the facilities not only to escape the heat but also to rest, work and study.
Meanwhile, tourists and wealthier residents often seek relief in air-conditioned environments such as shopping malls and restaurants.
