Bauchi assembly seeks engagement of retirees to train civil servants

The Bauchi State House of Assembly has urged the state government to engage experienced and skilled retired workers in training civil servants, to strengthen service delivery and ensure continuity in governance.
Babayo Akuyam (PDP – Hardawa State Constituency) said this while presenting a motion at the plenary on Wednesday.
According to Mr Akuyam, experience is the cornerstone of effective civil service, enabling professionals to navigate complex challenges with precision and foresight.
He said the state could leverage the expertise of retired workers to improve policy implementation, boost public trust, and ensure the delivery of high-quality services to meet public needs.
The legislator said retirement of highly skilled and experienced workers has created significant knowledge and skill gaps in the state’s civil service.
This, he said, posed a challenge to ensure continuity and operational efficiency in governance.
Mr Akuyam, therefore, advocated for the adoption of a strategy where retired professionals would be involved in knowledge transfer, comprehensive recruitment processes, and capacity building initiatives.
He said the strategy would reduce the cost of hiring external consultants and preserve the civil service organisational culture and values.
The Speaker, Abubakar Suleiman, directed the clerk of the assembly to transmit the resolution of the House to the executive for necessary action.
