The Bauchi State government has inaugurated the 2026 wet season activities and the sale of subsidised fertilisers at N20,000 per bag.

Governor Bala Mohammed said this on Tuesday during the inauguration of the fertiliser distribution exercise in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of the state.

He described agriculture as the backbone of the state’s economy and praised farmers for their resilience and contribution to food production.

Mr Mohammed reiterated the state government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for farmers to thrive by investing in agriculture transformation programmes.

He said the interventions formed part of a broader strategy to transform agriculture from subsistence to commercial production.

The governor noted that the high cost of fertilisers, which currently stands at N38,000 per bag, remained one of the major challenges confronting farmers in the state.

He said the state government had decided to subsidise the product to cut production costs and ease farmers’ burden.

“The Bauchi State government has approved the sale of a high-quality NPK brand of fertilisers at a subsidised price of N20,000 per bag throughout the 2026 farming season.

“This subsidy represents a major investment in food security and the prosperity of our people,” he said.

Mr Mohammed said the government had procured adequate quantities of fertilisers for distribution to the farmers across the 20 LGAs in the state.

He directed the Bauchi Agriculture Supply Company (BASAC) to ensure transparency, accountability and equity in the distribution process.

The governor said his administration also invested in improved seeds, agricultural mechanisation, irrigation development and extension services to encourage climate-smart agriculture, agro-processing, value addition and improved market access.

Mr Mohammed said the state government had revitalised the Bauchi State Agricultural Development Programme (BASDP), the Produce Development Company (PADCO) and BASAC to encourage productivity.

“The present administration has promoted irrigation farming and supported youth and women through agribusiness grants,” he said.

Mr Mohammed urged farmers to embrace modern farming techniques and utilise extension services to adapt to the challenges of climate change.

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Iliyasu Gital, said the launch of the farming season demonstrated the administration’s commitment toward supporting farmers and strengthening the agricultural sector.
