Bauchi govt begins rural-based campaign against waterborne diseases

The Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Board has begun a community outreach on health education to curb the spread of waterborne diseases across the state.
The board’s executive secretary, Ruwanu Mohammed, disclosed this in an interview with journalists in Bauchi on Friday.
Mr Mohammed said health education officers in the state’s 20 local government areas had been directed to carry out the exercise, particularly in hard-to-reach communities.
He said the campaign would focus on handwashing, hygiene promotion, environmental sanitation, routine immunisation, and nutrition, among other health-related issues.
According to him, the initiative aims to strengthen disease prevention efforts and ensure that residents maintain safe, healthy environments.
Mr Mohammed urged residents to adopt proper hygiene practices, including regular handwashing with soap and clean water, to prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases.
He noted that in 2025, the state had few suspected cases of such a disease and added that the community-based approach was designed to reach residents.
Mr Mohammed explained that the approach aimed to reach a larger population through interpersonal engagement.
He added that the board would continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to improve access to health information and services, especially in rural communities.
