The Hisbah police in Bauchi State have said their activities in destroying about 260 cartons of alcohol in the Misau Local Government Area of the state was enshrined in the enabling law for the operation of Islamic police in the state.

A leader of the Sharia police, Aminu Isah, confirmed the development in a statement on Sunday citing state laws which empowers the body to crack down on alcohol sale and consumption.

Mr Isah stated that the enforcement of the law, which has faced public condemnation, is part of its determination that the Shariah law be fully adhered to in the state.

Asides the prohibition of the sale and consumption of beers and alcoholic beverages, the Islamic law is also against the use stylish haircuts, trousers sagging, carrying of more than one woman on commercial motorcycle and tricycle riders, amongst others, he said.

Critics of Hisbah police actions argue that the Islamic law violates several human rights of people and called on the federal government to make the states practicing it to expunge the law.
