Bedridden Akeredolu evacuated abroad again; Aiyedatiwa now acting governor as Tinubu’s intervention fails

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has placed his deputy Lucky Aiyedatiwa in acting capacity amid yet another medical evacuation abroad, rejecting pressure to step down from several power brokers, including President Bola Tinubu.
Mr Akeredolu, in the statement issued on Tuesday by his spokesman, Richard Olatunde, would proceed on medical leave starting December 13 over what appeared to be another bout of a cancerous disease that has ravaged the governor throughout the year.
Mr Olatunde said a letter regarding his medical leave and a notice formally transferring power to Mr Aiyedatiwa in line with the Constitution will be transmitted to the House of Assembly.
“A formal letter regarding the medical leave and a notice formally transferring power in line with the Nigerian Constitution will be transmitted to the House of Assembly,’’ the statement said. “In the absence of Governor Akeredolu, the Deputy Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, will assume the responsibilities of the Governor in an acting capacity.”
“Governor Akeredolu expresses his gratitude for the unwavering support and affection of the people of Ondo State. He assures them that his administration remains committed to the path of progress and prosperity for the people,” the statement added.
The development came hours after MrTinubu, for the second time within a month, met with all the political actors from the state at the Presidential Villa in Abuja to find a solution to the crisis.
The president had reportedly suggested to participants that the resignation of Mr Akeredolu, who has not been seen in public for over eight months, would be ideal under the circumstances.
But the governor’s family members, including his son, appeared unable or unwilling to compel his resignation, which may further protract the state’s political crisis.
