The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benue State has inaugurated a strategic committee tasked with identifying and recommending a suitable deputy governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Performing the ceremony on Tuesday in Makurdi, the party state chairman, Samson Okwu, said the exercise was in response to the demands of their governorship candidate, Herman Hembe.

Represented by the state secretary, Peter Chirzenden, Mr Okwu disclosed that Mr Hembe wrote to the party requesting the committee’s formation after his consultation with the national and state leadership of the party.

According to him, the committee is expected to submit its report on or before June 20, 2026.

Speaking during the inauguration, Mr Okwu described the members as individuals of proven integrity and capacity carefully selected to undertake the critical assignment of identifying a suitable deputy governorship candidate for the party.

He said the ADC remained committed to bringing the dividends of democracy closer to the people through policies that promote economic development, local government autonomy and grassroots empowerment.

He recalled that the party had successfully conducted its primaries across the state, leading to the emergence of candidates for various elective positions, including the governorship candidate.

He charged the committee to carry out its assignment with sincerity, fairness and a commitment to the overall interest of the party.

He stated, “We believe that all of you have been selected based on merit and your track record in handling previous assignments. We expect you to identify not just a running mate but also a person of integrity, democratic values and commitment to party building.

“We are operating in a democratic environment and cannot impose a running mate on the people.

“The committee should consult widely on issues such as zoning and qualifications and ensure that the process remains transparent and inclusive. “

He listed the committee members to include Okpe Onah (chairman), Orker Jev, AVM Steve Onuh, Rose Ameh, Ogah Okwu, David Salifu, Jack Mulya, Abeje Egwa and Alex Igwe.

Responding on behalf of the committee chairman, Mr Onah thanked the party leadership for the confidence reposed in them and pledged that members would discharge their responsibilities diligently.

He assured the party that the committee would work tirelessly to identify a candidate capable of complementing the governorship candidate and enhancing the party’s chances of victory in the 2027 election.

“We are grateful that the leadership of the ADC found us worthy of this important responsibility. We shall put in our best to ensure that we recommend somebody who will be widely accepted within the party and across the state,” Mr Onah said.

He expressed confidence that with the right combination of candidates, the ADC would be well-positioned to win the governorship election and form the next government in Benue State.

The inauguration marks a significant step in the party’s preparations for the 2027 elections as it seeks to consolidate its structures and present a formidable ticket to the Benue State voters.
