The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) has said that government is committed to ensuring that Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Benue return home soon.

Its federal commissioner, Tijani Ahmed, stated this during the distribution of relief materials at Ichwa IDPs camp in Makurdi.

Mr Aliyu said that government was equally committed to ensuring that peace and security prevailed in Benue and and other parts of the country so that victims of violence could return to their homes and rebuild their lives.

He said that the commission was working towards more collaboration with the state government to address the humanitarian challenges and provide durable solutions.

“The plight of our dear brothers and sisters, who have been forced to flee their homes, is a pressing concern.

“I have seen you beaten by rain and scorched by the sun because you live in dilapidated make shift shelters.

“The commission is determined to assist the IDPs with relief materials, housing and education for children and healthcare for all.

“As a gesture of our commitment, today, we will distribute some food items and empowerment materials,” he said.

Earlier, James Iorpuu, executive decretary, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), had said that Ichwa IDPs camp had a total population of 14,229 with 2403 households.

The state commissioner for humanitarian and disaster management, Aondowase Kunde, in a remark, said that Benue was host to 21 IDPs camps with about two million people following series of attacks.

Chief of staff to the governor, Paul Biam, who received the team on behalf of Gov. Hyacinth Alia, commended the federal government for the support to victims of attacks.
