Berlin’s top electoral official has been warned against setting a date for the new election to the lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, too early.

“If we want to maintain the high quality standards that we have at both federal and state levels, I advise against an election date in January,’’ Stephan Bröchler told dpa.

The official advised against approaching the election with caution and added that politicians should listen to experts and not succumb to immediacy when setting the election date.

“It is about ensuring the quality of democratic elections in Germany. This is a highly valued asset, and I do not wish for the election to have to be repeated in the end,” he stated.

Berliners are well aware of this, as the city’s elections in 2021 were a fiasco and had to be repeated in part.

Mr Bröchler said that if politicians decided the elections should take place in January, his office would comply.

“But we must be aware that it endangers the quality of democratic elections,’’ added Mr Bröchler, who took office three years ago after the severe electoral mishaps and has since organised two repeat elections.
