The Federal Capital Territory Water Board has urged residents of the territory to report leaked pipes and contaminated water to the board for prompt response.

Daniel Audu, the board’s acting general manager, made the call in an interview with journalists in Abuja on Monday.

Mr Audu, while reacting to a report of contaminated water in some areas of Wuse Zone 6, assured residents of quick response to any anomalies affecting them.

A resident of the area, Samuel Ajayi, had complained that the water coming from the water board pipes was brownish and smelly for about two weeks.

The general manager said that upon receiving the complaint, the board’s head of quality assurance and the area manager went to the location, traced the pipe, and fixed it.

He said the problem was caused by a broken pipe, which allowed substances and particles to get into the pipe and contaminate the water.

“The problem lingered for two weeks because the residents did not report it to the water board until now.

“My people went there, and the issue had been resolved. It was a localised issue involving a broken pipe, which led to the contamination of the water,” he said.

He called on residents to always draw the attention of the water board whenever the water changes colour or is infested with particles and not good for consumption.

Mr Audu thanked the residents of the FCT for their cooperation and understanding.

He explained that water consumption was usually very high during the dry season, coupled with increasing consumers due to population growth in the FCT.

Mr Audu assured that the FCT water board would do the best it can to provide residents with clean water.

He also apologised to residents recently affected by the disruption in water supply in some areas of the territory, caused by emergency works by a contractor to fix a broken pipe.

When contacted, Mr Ajayi confirmed that the problem had been resolved and commended Mr Audu for the quick response.
