Boko Haram insurgents struck a military outpost and killed at least 22 members of the Nigerian Army, Peoples Gazette has learnt from sources familiar with the development.

The overnight attack in Monguno, Borno, came as the military prepared a renewed offensive against the terrorists, who have recently inflicted severe injuries on the Nigerian operation.

The affected colonel, I.A. Muhammad, and his men were attached to the 242 Battalion in Borno, the heartland of a costly insurgency that has persisted for 17 years.

A spokesman for the Nigerian Army did not immediately return a request seeking comments. A video of the attack circulated on social media moments earlier.

Mr Muhammad was the latest among at least six senior officers killed by Boko Haram elements in less than two weeks.

President Bola Tinubu has vowed to intensify his response to the violence, which began in 2009 and has tested successive administrations since Umaru Yar’Adua.
