Chadian President Idriss Deby has died after suffering injuries on the frontline against rebels, an army spokesman said on Tuesday according to the AFP.

Mr Deby was immediately replaced by a military council led by his son, AFP reported. The parliament was also reportedly dissolved.

Mr Deby, 68, was on Monday declared winner of a presidential election held on April 11.

The Chad president “has just breathed his last defending the sovereign nation on the battlefield” spokesman General Azem Bermandoa Agouna said in a televised statement.

The army had previously announced that rebels marching towards the capital, N’Djamena, were beaten back over the weekend.

Mr Deby assumed power in 1990 on the back of a rebellion 1990. He had been on the frontlines with the country’s troops in the fight against political rebels and Boko Haram insurgents.

He had won six elections since assuming power.
