Breastmilk natural, lifesaving, says health commissioner

Asabe Balarabe, the Sokoto health commissioner, urged mothers to embrace proper breastfeeding practices on Tuesday.
This ensures their children’s survival and well-being, shaping a brighter future for Sokoto.
Ms Balarabe made this statement during the 2024 World Breastfeeding Week event organised by the ministry in collaboration with the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (SPHDA) and development partners.
“Mothers have a crucial role in shaping the future of society through breastfeeding,” she said.
Represented by the SPHDA coordinator for reproductive health, Shafa’atu Bello, the commissioner emphasised that breastfeeding was not just a natural act but a powerful tool that has the potential to save lives.
“As a mother ministry, we will continue to support and promote programmes that encourage breastfeeding in our state. Moreover, I appeal to all the stakeholders to work together to create a culture where breastfeeding is not just encouraged but celebrated as a cornerstone of maternal and child health,” she added.
Earlier, the special adviser on SPHDA, Garba Bello, represented by the agency’s director of community health services, Tukur Magaji, reiterated their commitment to supporting any programme to promote the health sector.
Commenting on behalf of the development partners, the coordinator of FHI 360 in Sokoto, Victor Osatogbe, advised mothers to adhere to the breastfeeding advice offered by health personnel.
