Buhari “anguished” by loss of lives in Sierra Leonean tanker explosion

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed deep sorrow over the “unfortunate loss of lives and injury to so many” following the nighttime explosion of a petrol tanker in the Sierra Leonean capital, Freetown, on Friday.

Mr Buhari said the sympathies of the entire Nigerian nation are with the government and people of Sierra Leone over the sad incident.

“I’m anguished by the unfortunate loss of lives and injury to so many,” Mr Buhari said in a statement to President Julius Bio on Saturday.

At least 99 people were killed and more than 100 injured as a result of the disaster.

The tragic incident happened when a fuel tanker exploded following a collision, and many people rushed to the scene to siphon petrol.
