Peter Obi, former Anambra governor and Labour Party chieftain, says the late President Muhammadu Buhari did his best for Nigeria and once asked him to care for poor Nigerians.

Mr Obi, who paid a condolence visit to Mr Buhari’s family on Wednesday, disclosed this while speaking with journalists in Daura, Katsina State.

Asked how he would describe the late president, Mr Obi said, “I have the opportunity of meeting him while I was campaigning. I remember his words till today: ‘please care for poor Nigerians’; that, I always remember.”

The former governor stated, “I believe he (Buhari) did his best within his capacity.”

Mr Obi, alongside other politicians and dignitaries, visited Mr Buhari’s home in Daura to condole with the family.

The former president died at 82 in a hospital in London on Sunday, July 13, and was buried in Daura on Tuesday.

Mr Buhari was a former military dictator and two-term democratically elected president between 2015 and 2023.

His demise sparked reactions from Nigerians, many of whom defined his legacy by the economic hardship, disregard for the rule of law, human rights abuses, and massacres that characterised his administration.
