Electricity distribution companies say reverting to the old tariffs will not be immediate, because the regulator has not briefed them about the agreements reached between the government and labour on Sunday. 

The government has agreed to suspend a recent electricity tariff hike, but sources at the power firms told Punch that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has not yet notified the firms about the suspension. 

The power firms say reverting their billing platforms to the previous tariff arrangement will take at least three days.

Labour unions oppose a rise in electricity and petrol prices, but they suspended a nationwide strike that they planned to begin on Monday, after they reached a tentative deal with the government. 

The minister of state for labour, Festus Keyamo, announced that the pump price of petrol will not be changed but new electricity tariffs will be suspended for two weeks.

A technical committee on electricity tariff reforms was also set up to examine the justification for raising electricity tariffs.

The committee, comprising organised labour and government, will work for two weeks.
