Buhari regime performed well in primary healthcare: NMA chair

The chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Ondo State, Adeyemi Omosehin, says that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has performed creditably well in the basic healthcare system.

“In some areas, they have done well. Of course, the basic healthcare provision fund released by the administration has touched the basic healthcare facilities positively,” Mr Omosehin said in an interview on Saturday in Akure.

He said the initiative had improved healthcare service delivery in the state.

Mr Omosehin, however, said that the administration could not meet many expectations from stakeholders in the sector.

The NMA chairman stated that he could not blame the administration for many shortcomings in the sector because there were challenges that the previous administrations could not attend to appropriately before the outgoing administration was inaugurated.

“The administration is expected to have addressed the causes of the exodus of health workers. Doctors’ safety is not guaranteed in the country, and there are increasing cases of assault on medical doctors.

“The remuneration of doctors is worrisome and disturbing, leading to many doctors leaving the country,” he stated.

Mr Omosehin asked the incoming government to employ more doctors in all the government-owned health facilities so that the workload of doctors would be drastically reduced.

According to him, the government should ensure that doctors trained in Nigeria are retained.

He asked the government to implement all necessary mechanisms to discourage medical doctors from working in foreign countries.

Also speaking, Abiodun Faleye, the chairman of the House Committee on Health in the Ondo State House of Assembly, said the outgoing administration of Mr Buhari had done relatively well in the sector.

Mr Faleye, who condemned the increase in the exodus of health workers in the country, said that the federal government had great difficulty in tackling the ugly situation.

He stated that no reasonable and responsive government would allow its citizens to suffer.
