Buni reverses Bello’s convention committee, returns Fani-Kayode, others

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe, reaffirmed as chairman of the APC Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee has reversed the decision of Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger, who temporarily chaired the party.
Mr Bello had on March 9 adopted the party’s national convention subcommittee list which removed names Mr Buni shortlisted, including former aviation minister Femi Fani-Kayode and rejigged positions assigned to individuals.
Mr Bello had assigned Governor Abdullahi Ganduje as chairman of protocol subcommittee. He also assigned information minister Lai Mohammed as co-chairman and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as head of finance subcommittee.
Mr Buni reversed the Niger governor’s appointments, restoring individuals to their previously held positions.
Mr Sanwo-Olu will now head the media and publicity committee, with Mr Fani-Kayode as deputy chairman and Mr Ganduje as chairman of the subcommittee on accreditation of volunteers, diplomats, diaspora and observers.
President Muhammadu Buhari had earlier wrote to APC governors, directing them to allow Mr Buni to conduct the party’s national convention.
The president stated this in a lMarch 16 letter to Governor Atiku Bagudu, chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum.
Mr Buhari insisted the convention go as planned on March 26. He warned that replacing Mr Buni could result in legal action and the Independent National Electoral Commission invalidating all APC operations.
Mr Buhari’s letter followed a power struggle between Messrs Buni and Bello.
