Businessman drags ex-fiancee’s father to court, demands N260,000 dowry refund

A businessman, Nasiru Dayyabu, on Wednesday, dragged the father of his ex-fiancée, Sani Direba, to a Shari’a Court II sitting at Magajin Gari, Kaduna, over N260,000.
The complainant joined Mr Direba in the suit alongside two brothers demanding a refund of N250,000 dowry and N10,000 introduction money he paid to marry his daughter.
Represented by his counsel, Sani Sunusi, the complainant told the court that he sent his people from Karaye, Kano State, to Kaduna in 2025 to seek the defendant’s daughter’s hand in marriage.
“We paid the dowry and the introduction money (kudin gausuwa) and were waiting for them to set a date for the wedding. Unfortunately, the lady’s father called to inform us that they have cancelled the marriage,” he said.
The counsel said the complainant requested a refund of his money since September 2025, but efforts failed.
He claimed that his client had travelled to Kaduna from Kano three times about the issue and later filed a suit and hired a lawyer, a situation he said affected his (client’s) finances.
Mr Sunusi, therefore, prayed the court to compel the defendants to pay the sum of N250,000 as costs for wasting Mr Dayyabu’s time.
The three defendants stated they brought the N260,000 dowry and introduction money and were ready to present it to the court.
Regarding the N250,000 cost, the first defendant claimed that Mr Dayyabu called off the marriage and not them.
The judge, Yakubu Abdullahi, asked the defendants if they had witnesses, and they confirmed they did.
He adjourned the case to June 17 for the defendants to present their witnesses.
