California approves redistricting plan in victory for Newsom, Democrats

California voters have approved Proposition 50, allowing the state to redraw congressional district boundaries, potentially giving Democrats an advantage in the 2026 midterm elections.
The proposal, which was led by Governor Gavin Newsom, was designed to counter President Donald Trump’s agenda and policies in the U.S.
Supporters noted that gaining more seats in Congress would help combat Mr Trump’s policies, especially on immigration, healthcare, and reproductive care.
“We are proud to be here in California to be part of this narrative,” Mr Newsom said on Tuesday. “We are proud of the work the people of California state did tonight to send a powerful message to an historic president, Donald Trump. He’s the most historically unpopular president in modern history. In every critical category, Donald Trump is under water. He promised to make us healthier and healthier. We are sicker and poorer and he fundamentally understands that.”
He added, “Why else will he call Greg Abbot saying he is entitled to five seats? Why else is he trying to rig the midterm election before one single vote is even cast. He understands his position at this moment in the United States of America. We stood tall and firm in response to Donald Trump’s recklessness.”
Proposition 50 was initially a contentious issue, but Mr Newsom and other Democratic leaders successfully rallied support, framing it as a way to push back against Mr Trump’s presidency.
The measure was expected to give Democrats up to five additional seats in California’s congressional delegation, which is the largest in the U.S.
The outcome of Proposition 50 is considered a remarkable victory for Democrats, who hope to offset Republican gains in other states, such as Texas. However, the impact on the overall balance of Congress remains uncertain.
The new congressional districts will be in effect for the 2026 midterm elections, and their boundaries will be drawn by the state legislature, rather than an independent commission, a move considered as a response to Republican-led redistricting efforts in other states.
