The governments of Canada and Ghana have agreed to further their bilateral cooperation to tackle transnational crimes amid emerging security challenges.

The two countries highlighted the importance of the collaboration after the Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana Myriam Montrat paid a courtesy visit to Ghana’s Minister for Interior Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak on Friday.

“The meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on emerging security challenges and the importance of strengthening international collaboration in addressing threats that increasingly transcend national borders,” a statement on the meeting read.

According to the statement, the meeting provided an opportunity for Ghanaian and Canadian officials to exchange views of fast rising security problems and strengthen “international collaboration in addressing threats that increasingly transcend national borders.”

During the meeting, Mr Mohammed-Mubarak stressed that the growing issues could no longer be handled by individual countries on their own but must be a joint effort to protect citizens of both countries.

The minister also said that Ghana was ready to work together with Canada in areas in both countries share mutual interest.

“Hon. Muntaka expressed Ghana’s readiness to deepen collaboration with Canada in areas of mutual interest, noting that the ministry is happy to engage with its Canadian counterparts on initiatives that would strengthen Ghana’s security architecture,” the statement noted.

Furthermore, the two countries emphasised existing collaboration, including institutions such as the Ghana Police Service, the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), the Ghana Immigration Service and other security agencies in the country.
