Canada and Ukraine, on Thursday, signed a 100-year partnership to strengthen the relationship between the two countries amid the year-long war between the European nation and Russia.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the deal during an official signing ceremony in Alberta on Thursday as both leaders met for the third time in Canada.

In a statement published by the Canadian Prime Minister’s office, the deal includes the provision of $350 million to help Ukraine shore up its air defense through the United States’ Joint Ukraine Multinational Program – Services, Training and Articles Rapid Timeline (JUMPSTART).

Part of the financial package also consists of a nearly $23 million fund to bolster the capabilities of Ukraine’s security architecture as well as approximately $435 million in new loan guarantees to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to support energy security, including winter gas purchases.

Commenting on the agreement, Mr Carney vowed that Canada will continue to support Ukraine in the fight for freedom.

“Canada is, has, and always will be a steadfast ally in Ukraine’s relentless pursuit of freedom,” the prime minister said.

He added, “Today, Canada and Ukraine forged a new partnership which will equip the Canadian Armed Forces with world-leading drone capabilities, create jobs across Canada, and support Ukraine as they fight to achieve a just and lasting peace. Ukraine’s fight is our fight, their struggle is our cause, and their independence will be our victory.”

In response, Mr Zelenskyy extended his appreciation to the people of Canada, stating the commitments will assist Ukraine in the fight against Russia.

“I am grateful to Canada for the new defense package. Above all, it will strengthen our air defense – both our Patriots and our combat aircraft, which down Russian jet-powered “shaheds.”

“Our pilots are also being trained here in Canada – 21 Ukrainians are undergoing training, and this will be a significant reinforcement – together with other countries that are training our people at various stages to operate combat aircraft,” Mr Zelenskyy stated.
