Golfer Tiger Woods has blamed a last week car crash in Florida on distractions as police said two pills of hydrocodone, a semi-synthetic opioid used to treat moderate to severe pain and as a cough suppressant, were found on him.

In an arrest affidavit released by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday, Mr Woods told police he was using his cellphone and changing the radio station in his car when it clipped a pickup truck, causing the car to roll over.

Officers also described the 15-time major champion’s condition as “lethargic” at the time of the crash and added that the hydrocodone pills were found in his pocket at the scene.

According to the report filed by Sheriff Deputy Tatiana Levenar, the 50-year-old was “sweating profusely” at the back of a vehicle that had “cool air flowing” while he was being questioned.

Ms Levenar and one other officer at the scene said they observed “several signs of impairment” during conversations with the suspect.

“Woods’ movement was lethargic and slow,” the report read. “While walking, I observed Woods limping and stumbling to the right … I asked Woods if he was able to perform tasks such as walking and lifting his leg. Woods advised he has a limp and his ankle seizes while walking.”

Despite testing negative for alcohol after taking a breathalyser test at the scene, Mr Woods was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after he refused to submit to a urine sample to confirm whether there was the presence of drugs or medication in his system.

Mr Woods was also charged with property damage and refusal to submit to a test. He was later released from jail after the minimum mandatory eight-hour hold required by Florida law.
