Carabao Cup: Crystal Palace thrash Liverpool 3-0 to compound Arne Slot’s nightmares

Liverpool’s poor run continued on Wednesday as the reigning Premier League champions were eliminated from the Carabao Cup following a 3-0 home defeat by Crystal Palace.
Having only managed to win just one out of their last six matches across all competitions before the tie, head coach Arne Slot and his team were hoping to secure a much-needed victory to ease heightened tensions at Anfield.
However, forward Ismaila Sarr launched the first dent on such hope in the 41st minute when the Senegalese put Palace ahead with a low left-footed shot before doubling the lead from a well-placed effort from the centre of the box four minutes later.
Despite a series of tactical changes in the second half, Liverpool were unable to break the visitors’ composure and their woes were further compounded when youngster Amara Nallo was sent off in the 79th minute for a last-man foul on Justin Devenny.
The red card further enabled Palace to assert greater dominance in the game, as Yeremy Pino scored two minutes into regulation time to seal the victory, sending the visitors into the quarterfinals of the tournament.
In other results from the Carabao Cup fourth round ties on Wednesday, Chelsea defeated Wolves 4-3 at the Molineux Stadium, Newcastle beat Tottenham 2-0, Arsenal won against Brighton by the same score line, while Manchester City came from behind to steal a late 3-1 away win at Swansea City.
Full fourth round results:
Swansea City 1 vs 3 Manchester City
Wolves 3 vs 4 Chelsea
Newcastle United 2 vs 0 Tottenham
Liverpool 0 vs 3 Crystal Palace
Arsenal 2 vs 0 Brighton
