A cardiologist, Wang Jian’an, has called for adequate investment in medical education to bolster effective service delivery in the global health sector.

Mr Wang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Second Hospital affiliated with the Zhejiang University School of Medicine, known as ‘SAHZU’ in China, disclosed this during a briefing for journalists on a field visit to Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, China.

According to him, the hospital, established 150 years ago, has become a cradle of Western medicine in China through proper investment.

Mr Wang said, “It is important to invest adequately in medical education and practices to advance the effective delivery in the profession globally.

“Our mission here is not just to sustain a world-class hospital but also to promote medical education and further deepen people-to-people exchanges in medical practice. This has become important to ensure a better future for patients seeking attention and treatments at hospitals across the world, to meet their needs and enhance recovery from ailments.

“People who come to hospitals may not be sick, so providing high-quality medical services is key for such people to relate and better learn best practices in the medical profession.”

He said the hospital was founded in 1869 by the British Church Missionary Society under the name of Hangzhou Guangji Hospital to pioneer modern medicine practices in China.

The hospital has established a capacity-building programme for foreign health professionals to benefit from its operations and advance healthcare service delivery at the global level of China’s cooperation.

“We embrace the world, and the world embraces us. We continue to deliver our share of contribution to global health. SAHZU has collaborated with top medical institutions from 11 countries in clinical service, research and education.

“SAHZU houses one of the biggest international telemedicine programmes in China to bring the best available health care from our international partners to our patients in the most convenient way.

“Our institution relies on vigorous international cooperation and has, since 2009, established partnerships with not less than 30 medical institutions around the world towards fostering scientific exchanges and sharing of expertise,” he said.
