Chelsea officially confirm Todd Boehly-Clearlake takeover
Chelsea announced on Saturday morning that a group led by Todd Boehly had agreed to buy the club.
This announcement comes four days to the expiration of a special licence granted the club following sanctions imposed on the Lond club and its former Russian owner Roman Abramovich.
The Premier League club has endured a 12-week ordeal after the UK government froze Mr Abramovich’s assets for his ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the wake of Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine.
However, the Premier League and the UK government approved the Boehly company on Tuesday.
The sale was then approved by authorities in Portugal, where Abramovich has citizenship, early Thursday morning, triggering the official acknowledgement of the £4.25 billion deal.
“Chelsea Football Club can confirm that a final and definitive agreement was entered into yesterday night to sell the Club to the Todd Boehly/Clearlake Capital consortium,” says a statement on the club’s official website. “On Monday, the transaction is anticipated to be completed. At that time, the Club will provide additional information.”
