China wants to work with Nigeria to end modern-day slavery: Official

The Chinese embassy in the Federal Capital territory, Abuja, has pledged China’s readiness to work with Nigeria to address the issue of modern-day slavery.
The embassy made the commitment through its cultural counselor, Li Xuda, on Monday in Abuja, during the commemoration of the 2021 International Day for the Remembrance of Slave Trade and its Abolition.
According to the cultural counselor, both countries must join hands and seek solutions for the elimination of slavery.
“China is ready to work with Nigeria to fight against Modern Day Slavery and create a better future for our next generation,” Mr Xuda said.
Continuing, he noted that “The abolition of slavery is a major advancement in human society. As we are aware, in contemporary times, new forms of slavery have emerged, especially the modern-day subtle, concealed, and undefended forms of slavery.
“For example, today, child and adult slavery and forced labor are illegal in almost all countries, as well as being against international laws. But human trafficking for labor and for sex bondage continues to affect tens of millions of adults and children.”
Mr Xuda noted that statistics have shown the prevalence rate of such practices in Nigeria, hence, the commitment of China to help Nigeria and other UNESCO countries win the fight against modern-day slavery.
